A Call For Migrant Rights Support

One of the challenges we face in our society today is the issue of Migrant rights. Many Governments have failed to provide strict policies for migrants all over the world. These rights are supposed to be provided basically for the protection and security of immigrants.

The United Nations in 1948 set up a declaration for the protection of human and civil rights. Many countries signed up for this declaration which was a good thing. The question is how effective has this declaration been in some countries and whether there are strict penalties for people who violate these rights.

There was this recent case of Michael and Jim in Arizona, USA. These two individuals were the founders of Village Voice Media one of the weekly newspapers in Phoenix. The two journalists were arrested as a result of the contents of one of their publications on the newspaper which was condemning some commercial transactions done by Sherriff Arpaio in 2004. They were both arrested by Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio

The U.S Circuit of Appeals gave its ruling on the matter in 2012 saying that there was no probable cause for their arrest and so the matter was dropped. Lacey and Larkin then filed a suit against Arpaio and the prosecutor Wilenchik for the violation of their rights in 2007. The journalists were awarded the sum of $3.75 million by the Maricopa County as a result of this unlawful arrest.

The journalists after the settlement of the case decided to set up a support group called Frontera Fund to assist in advocating civil, human and migrant rights.

Aside from the Frontera Fund fighting for human rights, we also have other organizations involved in the support for people’s rights. There is the Angele de Frontera (Border Angels), they are non-profit and are located in San-Diego. This organization was set up by Enrique in 1986 and they fight for migrant rights and protection of immigrants. These groups have programs aimed at promoting education and they try to follow the routes of immigrants in the desert. They provide free legal services on certain days of the week and create awareness to people about their rights as immigrants. The organization was one of the active parties during American Immigration Crisis in 2014. They also play an active role in welfare and charity services by distributing food and clothes to migrants.

We also have the Human Rights Watch and they are located in different parts of the world. Aside from migrant rights, they handle different aspects of human rights. There is also the American Civil Liberties Union. Their aim and focus are to protect the civil rights of people. There is also the UK-based Migrants Rights Network and they arrange campaigns around the world on human rights. The group tries to network with other human rights organizations to assist in the fight against the violation of civil and human rights.

Also, the United States Human Rights Network have also tried to put their support by working with relevant bodies to address issues of affordable houses for people, criminal punishment, immigration rights and health care rights.
