Helane Morrison is the Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel for Hall Capital Partners, LLC. This is a San Francisco based investment firm run by female executives, and Morrison’s job is to ensure this company is abiding by all state and federal regulations applying to investments and finance. Helane Morrison serves alongside CEO Kathryn Hall and President Sarah Stein, both of whom have been honored as women experts in the hedge fund industry. Morrison has helped foster a culture at Hall Capital that embraces hard work and quality results for clients, as well as upholding integrity and transparency in practice.
Helane Morrison has always stood up against predatory investment practices and has helped bring criminal enterprises to justice. She initially wanted to go into journalism, and studied that field at Northwestern University, but upon graduating she decided to go into law and got her J.D. from California-Berkely Law School. She first became a clerk at the California Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit under the Hon. Richard Posner. She moved up to the US Supreme Court where she helped former Justice Harry Blackmun preside over several cases. She wanted to help combat fraud and investment malpractice, so she went into private practice at a San Francisco law firm.
During her time at Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin, she helped win cases for clients who had been wronged by brokers or bad advisors, and also led several investigations into local financial firms. In the late 1990s, the SEC decided to hire Morrison as a chief enforcer in the Northwest Pacific division, and Morrison helped bring several financial criminals to justice who had used loopholes in the legal system to transfer money.
She decided she needed to help restore the public’s trust in financial advisors, and as such, Hall Capital was the perfect fit for her. Teaming up with Karthyn Hall and Sarah Stein, Morrison has helped change not only the workplace opportunity for women at the financial firm, but also kept a strong culture of ethics there.
