The career life of Professor Michael Lacey

An executive summary of Michael Thoreau Lacey’s career and life is one that is marred with great achievements that has made him a household name in the world of mathematics.

As a great American mathematician Michael has immensely contributed quit a lot to the field of mathematics. He was born on the 26th of September 1959 and as a young boy he got fascinated with mathematics and as result decided to pause a career in it.

Michael Lacey has a solid educational background that saw him earn his Ph. D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the year 1987. He was privileged to receive this under Walter Philipps’ directive. The thesis that he did for his Ph. D. majorly dealt in the area dealing with probability in Banach spaces. In this thesis, he was able to solve the problems in connection to the iterated logarithm’s laws for empirical functions characteristics.

Subsequently over the years, Michael Lacy has had the opportunity to work in other subjects in the very wide the field of mathematics which include probability, harmonic analysis, and importantly ergodic theory. As a well-recognized academic with wide knowledge and experience, Lacey has also worked in various institutions of learning. He first held his postdoctoral position at Louisiana State University before heading to the University of North Carolina and it was at this juncture and time that he came up with confirmatory proof on central limit theorem.

He also held another position at Indiana University from the year 1989 to 1996. While working here he received a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. During his tenure, there he embarked to study of bilinear Hilbert transform.

The study of this bilinear Hilbert Transform had been at the time a topic of conjecture under Alberto Calderon and was solved by Lacey and Christoph Thiele in the year 1996 and as a result of it they were graced with the Salem Prize award. Read more: Mike Lacey | Crunchbase

The award earned him fame and recognition as an ingenious mathematician all over the world. His contributions to mathematics in generals have been widely adopted and used as study material. In addition to his many accomplishments he has also worked as a Professor of Mathematics at George Institute of Technology.

To add to his many accomplishments in 2004 Michael Lacey received Guggenheim Fellowship as a reward for collaborating with Xiaochun Li on a project work. The year 2012 saw him become accepted in the American Mathematical Society.
