There’s a strange phenomenon that everyone experiences at some point in their life. We cross paths with someone that has an incredible impact on our life in one way or another These encounters come out of the blue, and they happen with such energy that they are never forgotten. Venezuelan songstress, Norka Luque, had one of these life-changing moments when she moved from France to the United States to continue her music career. Norka met Emilio Estefan, the Grammy-award winning producer of the hit group, Miami Sound Machine. Estefan moved to the United States fifty years before Norka arrived in Miami.
Emilio left Cuba when he was a teenager, and he followed his dream just like Norka Luque did. Estefan worked for Bacardi Imports to keep a roof over his head, and he started a band called the Miami Latin Boys. The Miami Latin Boys played Latin dance music in the clubs along South Beach. Just like Norka, he met someone, Gloria Fajardo, and she changed the direction of his life. Gloria Fajardo became Gloria Estefan when she married Emilio. Gloria became the lead singer of Miami Latin Boys. Emilio changed the name of the group to Miami Sound Machine, and he was nominated 30 times for a Grammy and won 19 times.
Norka Luque’s story has a similar ring to it. Norka left Venezuela and moved to France to study business after graduating from upper school. Norka received degrees in fashion, marketing, and the culinary arts but he first love was music. She started singing when she was eight and landed a role in a musical that featured the music of Shakira, one of her childhood idols. Little did she know that she would meet Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Celia Cruz years later in Miami. Norka’s French band, Bad Moon Rising, played in the French dance clubs on the weekends, and they developed a loyal following. Norka went to a Ricky Martin one night while she was in France, and she realized she had to move to Miami to make it in the Latino music scene.
Norka made the move, and she got a job singing in one of the Latino dance clubs on South Beach. Emilio Estefan heard about Norka and her dynamic voice, so he made it a point to meet her. That’s when her world changed. Emilio and his team of composers and arrangers produced Norka’s first album, and it’s a hit. Her latest single from the album, Milagro, climbed the charts and made her international star.
